During my time living in a dormitory I developed an application for me and my flatmates to organize our shared diners and related accounting.
A 12" touchscreen in the shared kitchen/living room acts as the main interface to the application. Here everybody could easily subscribe for upcoming diners, make notes about their attendance and declare their costs when it was their turn to cook diner for everyone.
The administrators of the system have access to an external admin app, which is accessed from a normal browser (over https). Here can new residents be added to the system and invoices be created.
Both the front-end and back-end are web applications created with HTML/CSS and CakePHP. The front-end user interface and experience however is specially designed to be controlled from the touchscreen.
